Frequently Asked Questions

Is this some kind of satanist tripe?

Absolutely not. The sorcerer-demon theme is very old, including both classical myth as well as modern fiction and movies. The sorcerer as a character (hero or villain) rules demons, but does not worship them.

What is unique about the game?

Sorcerous magic leads to wild and intense plotlines. In many roleplaying games, a failed magic roll means looking at one's fizzling fingers and then waiting for one's next action. In Sorcerer, it means that the demon disobeys, or obeys and screws things up. "Nothing" never happens.

Also, any character can try any sorcerous ritual on any demon. It's all a matter of how competent you are, from the first moment of the game.

I heard Sorcerer has no setting. Is that true?

No. The game provides a framework for customizing a modern-day setting into exactly what you want to play. It does not provide a totally-developed background, but gives you the tools to get your own creation ready very quickly. However, it's true that Sorcerer is not based on a metaplot (an ongoing story provided by the game author), so this may be the source of what you've heard.

Is the game supported?

You bet. Three supplements are available: Sorcerer & Sword, The Sorcerer's Soul, and Sex & Sorcery.

Plus, there are several mini-supplements available as well, with more to come. Check out the writeups for all the supplemental material in the Buy Sorcerer section of the website.

Is this an "adult" game?

Some illustrations hover around R rating. Otherwise, no, Sorcerer is not going to excite those looking for soft or hard porn in their pictures and text. They should find some other website.

On the other hand, this is not sweetness-and-light role-playing and everyone involved should approach it from a mature point of view. The system allows your game to be about whatever you want.

Why should I play this game?

Because it raises interesting questions without putting up barriers against answering them. Because the rules make sense and are easy to use, without being simplistic. And, because you have person-to-person, honest contact with the designer, and full support of your actual play, to an extent never before seen in role-playing.
